When your training supports your life's goals, the training has meaning and holds more joy.
Fitness is important. We all know this. But why? What are we doing this for? Is it simply because we love the gym? For some people the answer may be yes, but for most it is because they want to be able to do more with their lives.
When you start a workout regimen, it is helpful to know what you want to accomplish. You will find the answer to that question by looking at what is important to you in your life. There is a limitless amount of answers to why someone works out, let’s look at a few examples.
If you want to keep up with your children, then you know that your workouts need to support the types of activities that they do. It may be that you need a lot more stamina, and probably strength, to keep up with some of their activities. Do things that will mimic the types of activities they do. If you do not know what to do, start with some of the following:
- Interval training
- Wind sprints
- Run in the sand
- Body weight resistance (i.e. push-ups)
Some people just like to eat - a foodie. They love to eat, and that is what they live for. But, in reality, they do not want to have really bad health. For these people it is probably not about looking ridiculously fit, but more about keeping things in check so they can eat what they want. For them, it will be about any exercise they want, they just need to move their butts each day. For this, you should do whatever you want to keep your butt moving. Do some cardio and some weight training. Cardio burns a lot of calories at the time it is executed; but, the more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn even while at rest. So a combination of the two is a good option for anyone. If you don't know what you want to do then how about:
- Go on a run
- Do some body weight resistance
- Join a workout group (this is especially great for accountability)
If you want to be able to be a crazy adventurer, then you will want to do a variety of exercises to keep you fit and ready to take on any adventure that presents itself. For the adventurer type, they also want to keep their exercise interesting and an adventure in itself. Test out some of these:
- Rock climbing
- Weight training
The more varied it is, the more you will stay active in it and the more effective it will be. So, change it up often.
Whatever your reason is when you are working out, keep that reason in mind. It helps to push you. It is what motivates you so use it. When you are thinking of that reason, your exercise becomes more exciting because it has a purpose. Keep that reason burning strong in you, and think about why you are working out. Select your workout to support that.
