Find something you actually enjoy, you will be amazed at how well you stick with your workouts.
Do you have a hard time sticking to your exercise regimen? An important aid to help you stay with your exercise habits is to find something you like to do. One reason people do not stick with their new fitness routines is because they are forcing themselves to do something they hate. If you hate the gym then don't do it! You can workout at home, or outdoors. If you love to dance, dance! If you love to swim, swim! I had a client who was just getting back into exercise and had some physical challenges to overcome and she loved photography. I created a routine that incorporated photography and exercises that she could do at the same time. She wound up enjoying it and also got herself started on a new healthy lifestyle. You can do anything, just as long as it is improving your health.
If you are doing something you need to do, like a particular program because you are in rehabilitation, or the doctor has told you that you have to weight train for a specific issue, then you may not love what you are doing at first; but look for an aspect of it you do like. If the thought of any exercise is painful then a personal trainer can be a great way to go. Find a trainer you actually like being around; that way you will look forward to visiting with your trainer while you are getting into a routine and learning to enjoy fitness. If hiring a trainer is not a possibility right now, then find a friend to get started with. Having someone else to workout with can make it so much more enjoyable and keep you more dedicated to it.
You can sample plenty of different activities and you can choose them based on your fitness levels. If you are very sedentary currently then something really mellow like golf could even work to get you active; just make sure you are walking to each hole. For someone who is already a little active, golf would probably not do much for their fitness levels. The list below has a wide variety of activities you can sample. Some are mellower and some are more active, but keep in mind you can increase the activity level of anything you do, even golf. If you love golf, but you need to workout more, then create another game within golf, where for every hole you miss you you need to do 10 push-ups, or jumping jacks.
The goal is to start by at least getting yourself moving and after that continuing to push your limits. Below is a list of activity ideas. Test some out, but do what is right for your fitness and adventure level. This list does not mean you should go out and do dangerous activities; it is simply listing things that are active and different types of fun for a variety of people.
As you can see, there is no shortage of exercise ideas. Test some different things out. Don't be afraid to do something and find you're horrible at it. Everyone has to start somewhere. There are tons of classes out there and anything you are interested in will have a class available somewhere. So sky's the limits!
