Dear Lauren,

I know I need to start going to the gym to get myself in shape, but I am so self-conscious about my body that I have a hard time forcing myself to go. I find excuses many days not to go to the gym. What can I do?

Great question! Here are a few things you may want to consider.

First off, everyone who goes to the gym is concerned about themselves, their workouts and how they look. So, right there, you should know that it’s ok to feel self-conscious because you are not alone in that. However, no one is going to stare at you or make rude comments about how anyone looks. That’s definitely not a concern there, because everyone is there for a common reason. What’s more, everyone at the gym started somewhere. The people there weren’t always in awesome shape, and were intimidated just like you when they were in your shoes.

Secondly, you do not need to go to the gym to get a good workout. If you are willing to workout at home, this can be a great way to get on your healthy path. In addition, it will lessen the self-conscious feeling, because no one will be around. At home, too, you can easily grab a set of dumbbells and do a variety of exercises with them, as along with body weight resistance. So, it is possible to get a full, intense workout in the comfort of your own home, if you would rather start out that way.

Third, find something you actually enjoy. This is the biggest key to any workout program. If you like it, you will be worried less about how you look and more about the activity you are doing. Try outdoor hikes, walks, or even joining a dance class. Many people are not fond of the gym, and that’s perfectly okay. It is better to be honest about it and find what you will like, rather than make yourself miserable.

The hardest part is taking that initial step. But, before you know it, you will be very comfortable with what you are doing. Keep moving forward!
