Dear Lauren,

I want to get myself into better shape but I am working so much and have almost no time to dedicate to a health and fitness routine. What would be the best thing to do?

Dear Amanda,

This is an issue I hear often. As a society we are getting busier and busier, and we seem to always be running around with very little time for ourselves.

The first thing I would suggest is to look at your diet. How are you eating? What you eat will make the biggest immediate difference if losing body fat is what you are aiming for. You can start with small steps like replacing some of the soda you drink with water or cutting out half of the sugar. It is usually easier to start with small steps. The goal would be to cut the sugar and refined foods out of your diet. Eat as many vegetables as you can as they not only have more nutritional bang for your buck but it will fill you up more without all the excess empty calories of many other foods.

As far as workouts go, keep it simple for now. If you can take a walk on your lunch break that is great (still eat lunch), or have a few exercises that you can do in just a few minutes. My favorites are pushups, pull-ups, squats, planks, jumping jacks and jump rope; but of course you will need to discover which exercises work best for you. This way you can squeeze 5-10 minute segments into your day for a quick workout. Little things like this can make a big difference.
