Dear Lauren,

I hurt my back and no longer have the ability to do much, including walking. I have gained a lot of weight and it is really bothering me, especially since none of my clothes fit any more. What can I do to steadily lose weight without the ability to exercise?



Dear Becky,

I am sorry you are going through that. I understand that is a difficult situation. The good news is that there are some things you can do.

#1 Reduce your stress-Stress not only keeps weight on your body, but it also inhibits your healing process, and you need that at full strength.

#2 Clean up your eating. Your eating is going to be so important. Your nutrition can boost your immune system. Eat balanced meals of lean protein, vegetables a healthy carbohydrate and some healthy fat. Depending on how long you have had this issue, you may want to look at what foods may be causing any further inflammation in your system.

#3 Use a food journal -This will not only make sure you are not eating excess calories, but it will also show you what you have been eating and where you can improve.

#4 Give yourself a break. Gaining body fat is a normal response for a body that is in distress. The weight really should not be the main concern, the main concern is to heal your body and eliminate the pain you are in. Be patient with yourself. This is not permanent. I know it can feel that way especially when you have been going through it for a while, but you can find the solution to this problem. Make sure you find a great doctor to work with and do not be afraid to keep looking around until you find a doctor that can help you.
