Dear Lauren,

How do I keep the motivation coming in regularly? I lose my motivation too quickly and need to keep a fire under my butt to keep going. What do you suggest?



Hello Rebecca,

I like the quote by Zig Ziglar that says: “People often say that motivation does not last. Well, neither does bathing, which is why we recommend it daily.” This is a really good way to look at motivation. Not only do you need to refresh it often, but you many also need to find different types of motivation. For example, if there is a specific affirmation that’s working great then peters out after a month or so, you will want to find a new one. Or, if there’s a new workout keeping you super motivated but then find it stops working, you need to find something new. Do not be upset if suddenly what was working before is not working now. That happens to pretty much everyone. Just recognize it, and look for something new to jump start you.

Know your why. Knowing why you want to be healthier makes staying motivated 100 times easier. Maybe you have goals centered around your child, for example. If that is the case, then you may want to have energy to play with your child. What’s more, you may want to be mentally alert and be a good example for them. Whenever you get that lazy lack of motivation happening, all you have to do is think about your child and it will give you the extra boost and commitment you need. This same example goes for business, having a more adventurous life, etc. You simply have to find what is most important in your life, and see how being healthier is important to achieving it.

Set goals. This is huge for motivation. You want a large overall goal, something you are working towards, and then the small steps you will take to accomplish it. Setting the big goals gives you something to be working towards. The small steps you plan each week, in turn, will make it easy to not get overwhelmed.

There are a lot of articles on this site that you can read through to get more motivation, and we will be posting more every week. Best of all, all this information is free, so use it! You may find motivation in unexpected ways and that is okay. Use whatever works for you, just keep it going.
