Dear Lauren,

In your book you talk about finding what you want to do with your life, an overall goal, and then from that to create a fitness goal. The problem is, I don't really have an overall goal, but I know I need to get healthier. So is there another way to find out what I should be doing?

Thank you,
Desiree

Dear Desiree,

I do have a goal setting workbook coming out very soon that will have a lot of different tools in it. The reason I say to find what your life’s goals are, is because it will help you design a healthy lifestyle that supports what you want to accomplish in your overall life’s goal. Not only that but it helps keep you motivated. But if you have no overall life goal you can still create a healthy lifestyle.

I would still recommend finding an exercise you enjoy doing, this alone will help you stick with your workouts. If you do not know what you enjoy doing the take a few different classes and see what strikes an interest in you.

When it comes to eating healthier foods, find ways to do this that you can live with. If you like complex gourmet food then a plain chicken and vegetable diet will be torture and dropped after a week. Instead find healthier ways to cook the foods that you love.

Look at other things that motivate you. Do you have a child that you want to be a good example for? Do you want to be able to go and explore the world more? Do you simply want to have more energy to enjoy life more? If you do not have some deep rooted passion and goal that you are working on then maybe you just want to feel good or be stronger, granted it tends to not be as strong of a motivation as a life’s overall goal, but it is somewhere to start. Think of a time when you have been physically sick or weak and then know that you never want to be there again, Don't dwell on this part, it just gives you a basis so you can compare where you were to where you want to go. What you will focus on is picturing and working towards making yourself stronger and healthier everyday.

Get a friend to be your workout partner! This is good external motivation. When you have someone that is going to be waiting for you at the gym it is much harder to bail on the workout.

Keep your eyes open for the goal setting workbook, I think that will help a lot but in the mean time there are a lot of articles on this website for motivation, and they will keep coming. So read them and see what sparks some motivation in you. If you read through these articles and think about it just a little bit you will find your motivation.

Don't wait, Go out there and get started!

LIVE FULL OUT!
