Dear Lauren,

I eat out a lot since I am always on the run. I want to eat better, but to be honest I won't be cooking much. Is there a way for me to eat healthier on the run?

Dear Heather,

First of all, I would say that I am a very busy person myself so I understand this issue. Something I do is cook big batches of salmon, chicken breast, and any other protein I like. I then buy big containers of salad greens and a healthy dressing. All I have to do is put a handful or two of each in a Tupperware container. It has made my life so much easier and I have become a prep master with my food. However, I think what you are asking is if there are healthier fast food options? The answer is yes.

You can always ask for a grilled chicken breast sandwich with no bread and a side salad. Most places will have that option. The same principle works with a hamburger; no bun and keep the condiments lean. If you are going to get Mexican food, aim for a taco and go for the corn tortilla (soft not fried), and ask them to leave off the cheese.

Most places will have salad and or grilled vegetables. So wherever you go, look for opportunities to get a lot of vegetables and some protein. I would also recommend finding a dressing you like to carry with you so that you know you are getting something good. Tessemae's is a dressing you can get at Whole Foods markets and it is made with cold pressed olive oil. I will either have that or make my own and keep a small container with me.

If you are like a lot of people needing the extra pick me up in the middle of the day, instead of grabbing a soda while you are out go for some unsweetened tea. You can even keep some tea bags with you. This way you are not getting the sugar or artificial sweeteners (both are bad for you) but you are still getting your pick me up. Good job at starting to be more conscious on your eating.
