Your motivation is low and you have done all kinds of motivational work on yourself, so what now?
You have done affirmations, set your goals, used all the different motivational techniques I talk about in other articles and yet you still occasionally get discouraged or down. It's okay; that is normal. It happens to the best of us. We all go through some tough times no matter how positive we are or how great our lives are, but there are ways to deal with this to help you get back on your path faster.
Happiness is an inside job; no one can truly make you complete and happy aside from yourself. Despite this truth, sometimes having something outside of yourself to give you a boost can help. What you can do is create a buddy system. This is someone that you can call whenever things get tough and can give you the outside help you sometimes need.
Someone from the outside can:
- Remind you that this is only temporary
- Help you see the silver lining in the situation
- Remind you to use this tough situation as motivation to make your life even better.
- Remind you to dust yourself off and keep going
Most of the time you just need to be able to sort through things in your own head, but sometimes having someone else to shed a little bit of light can help. You are the only person who truly knows what is best for yourself, but when you are having a very emotional time it can be hard to see the forest through the trees. You may think that there is no way to change things or turn things around. An outsider would look at this situation and see it from a different perspective without emotions clouding their judgment.
You may have a roadblock, speed bumps, potholes and more on your road to success in anything. The question is how fast you can get back on your road and keep driving.
Maybe you had a bad accident before running your first obstacle course race, and you were really looking forward to it. Now all that hard work looks like it will be wasted. But that is not true. Your friend can look at the situation and see how you have trained and remind you that now you understand what it takes to train for something like this, as soon as you are healed you can waste no time figuring out routines and how to perform certain exercises.
Perhaps you have been working out and eating excellent for a few months and are not seeing any positive results in your body and are starting to get very frustrated; you may be to the point of giving up and going back to your old unhealthy habits. An outside point of view can see the situation without the emotional coloring. They can look at you and either see that you are making progress and it is just not moving as fast as you want, or they can see that you really are not making progress and can help you sort out why. It may be that you need to see a doctor about hormones or it may simply be that you are eating more than you thought. In a situation like this, your friend will be able to help you find out what is going on and help you to make a better decision, instead of giving up.
We can have big and little things that come up which interfere with our goals, the point is to always find a way to continue on; when you are not sure how you should do it, a friend might be able to give you their point of view and help get you back on the road faster. Find someone to create your buddy system with. It can give you an extra boost when you need it.
