Is there a best exercise for weight loss? I specifically want to target my stomach and butt. Is there something specific I can do?

Dear Jessi,

Unfortunately there is no such thing as spot reduction. You can spot strengthen a part of the body but not intentionally lose weight in just one spot. As far as the best exercise in general for weight loss, that would be a combination of weight training and cardio. Cardio works with burning a lot of calories as well as helping insulin sensitivity, which is a cause for many peoples weight issues. Weight training not only tones up the body, which not only makes us look sexy but also the more lean muscle mass we have the more calories our bodies burn on a regular basis.

The best cardio and weight training is to do a variety so that the body does not adapt. Perhaps you might do bicycling one day a week, running, swimming and then maybe two days of weight training in between; then you can vary what body parts you are working with and how you are working it such as slow reps, super sets etc.; I would stress finding activities you like to do so that you keep up this routine. If you love dancing, take a dance class, if you love running, then run. What ever you do just make sure you enjoy it, you will have an easier time sticking with your fitness as a lifetime habit.
