Dear Lauren,

There is so much talk about what the best moves are when it comes to exercise, and I am not sure what is what. So my question is, what are the best moves to help me lose weight?

Thank you,

Dear Frankie,

Well the absolute best workouts to help you lose weight (body fat) are the ones that you will actually do. That is first and foremost. There are so many workouts out there and they all promise to give you the best body ever, and in all honesty most of them will get you into awesome shape, it is just a matter of doing them. I always recommend people find something they love to do, this way you will look forward to it and therefore stick with it. If you love weight training then hit the weights, if you love dancing then take some classes, if a you like groups then take a aerobics class, if you just want some quiet time take up running. Joining a sports team can also be a great option if you like to workout with other people and if you like a little bit of competition to keep you going.

If you find something you love and it does not include weight training then you should add at least a day a week of weight training in as well. Weight training will help you tone up and the more muscle mass you have the more calories you will burn even while at rest. Weight bearing exercises also help protect against osteoporosis and keeps your muscles stronger to do the activities you love. If you only have a short amount of time available for weight training then I would suggest some exercises that hit multiple muscle groups at once. My favorites are:

  • Push ups

  • Pull ups

  • Squats

  • Lunges

  • Planks

  • Dips

These exercises can be done at home and the only piece of equipment you need is a pull up bar. These exercises hit multiple muscle groups so you get the most bang for your buck, or the most benefit for your time.

Start making a list of all the activities you would enjoy doing and go test them all out and find the one you can really enjoy doing. This one thing alone can make your fitness habit stick for life. And don't be afraid to change it up, you may get really into running for a few months or even a year and then get bored and want to do something new. Just keep doing something you enjoy. You got this!
