Fish oil is hailed as a miracle cure for many things that ail us. Indeed it can have a great effect on our health. Why you ask?

Fish Oil Helps With…

  • Promotes weight loss

  • Inflammation (Inflammation is a key component in many health ailments)

  • Cancer

  • Asthma

  • Depression

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • ADHD

  • Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Better brain function and protection of the brain

  • Joint health

  • Lowers cholesterol

  • Protects against diabetes

  • Better skin

  • Helps with gut issues like IBS

  • Helps against cystic fibrosis

  • Improves eye sight

But the type of fish oil we need more of is the omega 3's. The American diet tends to be very high in omega 6 fatty acids and severely lacking in omega 3's. Our bodies need omega 3's to be healthy yet it is something our bodies cannot create on their own. We must get this nutrient from outside sources. If you eat fish regularly already then you may be getting enough omega 3's. But if you don't think you are getting enough omega 3 fatty acid in your diet, then there are some things you can add that can help boost it. Obviously fish is the best source of omega 3 fatty acid, and of the fish salmon is a good, easy to get, rich source of this nutrient. But there are other things you can eat to get more omega 3's in your diet.

Other Sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids:

  • Walnuts

  • Grass fed beef

  • Pasture fed, flax, fish meal or algae fed chicken eggs

  • Navy beans

  • Kidney beans

  • Winter squash

  • Flax seed oil

  • Wild rice

  • Chia seeds

  • Flax seeds (Flax seed and Chia seeds are said to be harder for our body to utilize)

Some companies add omega 3's to their bread, milk and other products, but you are still better off getting it from a natural source like the things we have listed above.


It is always a good choice to get your nutrients from food as much as possible, but if you simply cannot manage to get your omega 3's in, then maybe a supplement is what you want. When looking at supplements, understand that there are different types of oils available to you.

#1 Fish oil will have a higher concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. This is the go to when you are looking for a supplement for omega 3 fatty acid.

#2 Cod liver oil has omega 3 fatty acids, but less than regular fish oil. The big benefit of cod liver oil is that it is a good source of vitamin A &D.

#3 Krill oil is a newer omega 3 oil on the market and there are some studies that say it may be superior due to its antioxidant properties as well. Many experts say that more long term studies need to be done on krill oil before they can know exactly how it will work in the body.

Just because omega 3's and fish oil have been shown to help in all the ways that is shown does not mean that it is a miracle cure. It will help with these things, but this does not mean that fish oil should take the place of eating healthy or working with your doctor. It simply means that it can be added to help you be healthier. Our health is all about little steps, it is rarely one thing that cures all. But knowing what items will help us take those steps can make all the difference in the world.
